Generic Advair (Fluticasone Propionate / Salmeterol) for Asthma and COPD Treatment
Advair (Seroflo) is a brand-name corticosteroid drug used for treating asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drug contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol. Of course, you won’t cure these diseases completely, but the symptoms can be controlled and mitigated through reducing the irritation of air passages. Should you experience shortness of breath, chronic diseases or any other breathing problems, Advair can ease up your life.
Get Advair (Seroflo) in Canada and save your money
Thanks to the government policy that aims to regulate prices on medications and the widespread distribution of generic drugs, Canada boasts cheap and no less effective medications. January 30, 2019, the generic version of the drug came out. Generic Advair underwent a number of tests and is sure to be absolutely safe. What’s more, the drug is up to 50 per cent cheaper than the brand-name analogue, which means more people will have access to them and will be able to receive the treatment.
Drug application and dosage
The drug is taken with a diskus inhaler. The positioning of the device can be either horizontal or vertical. While using it, you can often taste or feel the drug, though if you don’t, it’s perfectly OK too. Do not forget to close the inhaler after using it. Also, thorough rinsing of the mouth cavity is recommended to avoid irritation and thrush. For more information, carefully read all the instructions and consult a medical expert in case you have any other issues.
Though effective, Advair doesn’t yield the result immediately, but is rather a long-term tool. For dealing with asthmatic attacks, quick-relief inhalers are used instead. As a rule of thumb, a patient needs to use Advair two times a day, with equal intervals. During treatment course, drug withdrawal is highly undesirable because you may not get the full benefit of it. Try it for one or two weeks in the least to see if there are some positive changes.
The intake of Advair must be regulated according to health condition, age and risk factors. It’s worth mentioning that there are two types of inhalers, namely Advair Diskus and Advair HFA. The former is for patients aged 4 and older, and it is the dry powder inhaler. The latter is recommended for treating disease in patients aged 12 and older, and it comes as an inhalation aerosol.
As already mentioned, the ideal dosage of the drug is two inhalations per day, with 12-hour intervals. Advair HFA has stronger effect. Do not take more than two inhalations of Advair HFA 230/21 twice daily. In case of overdose, immediately call a poison center or dial emergency telephone number 9-1-1.
When it comes to Advair Diskus, the recommended dosage is:
- 100/50 two times a day for patients between 4 and 11 years.
- 100/50, 250/50, or 500/50 two times a day for patients aged 12 and older.
- 250/50 two times a day for patients with COPD.
Do not ignore the precautions. Be careful.
As with most other medications, Advair may not suit everyone. So, before deciding to start using it, make sure you are not in a high-risk group, better still, consult your doctor to prevent undesirable consequences. Those patients who are lactose intolerant or who have allergic reactions to fluticasone propionate, salmeterol, may have to look for alternatives or at least carefully observe their doctor’s instructions. Neglecting professional advice can lead to allergic seizures of particular severity.
Using corticosteroids also reduces bone density, which makes them even more fragile and therefore increases the risk of premature death. As for pregnant women, it is unknown whether the drug can pose a threat to a baby.
Contact your healthcare provider if you also have:
- diabetes
- high-blood pressure
- heart diseases
- thyroid problems
- weak immune system
- liver problems
- eye problems
Remember that if your medical condition does not meet the needed requirements, you can always consider other inhalers similar to Advair (AirDuo RespiClick, Trelegy Ellipta, Symbicort). But be wise and do not act of your own accord anyways.
Does Advair cause harmful side effects?
Unfortunately, there’s no good without bad. An overwhelming number of drugs do have side effects, although it doesn’t mean that they are bound to happen. But it’s always better to be on the safe side. Some side effects are not of a particular danger and can go away more or less quickly, for during the course your body adapts to the drug ingredients. So don’t be too scared if you experience the following symptoms:
- choking
- congestion
- sneezing
- dry mouth
- running nose
- muscle pain
- sleep disorder
Other than that, there is a range of symptoms that are more alarming. You should seek medical attention if you have:
- fever
- cough
- nausea
- blurred vision
- severe headache
- fast heart rate
- sore throat
- stabbing pain in limbs
- thrush
- pneumonia
Drug interactions to avoid
Despite being helpful, Advair may not go well with other medications. If you take a number of drugs simultaneously, expect possible interactions, that is, reactions that occur as a result of drug incompatibility. If the interaction is moderate or minor, benefits are expected to outweigh disadvantages. Major interactions are particularly dangerous, and taking medicine is highly undesirable to avoid health deterioration.
Advair interacts with some drugs that are used to treat HIV such as indinavir, ritonavir, nelfinavir, to name but a few. The thing is, these drugs decelerate the breakdown of fluticasone propionate and salmeterol in the body, thereby increasing the level of these components.
Some antifungal medications like ketoconazole may cause the same effect as mentioned above. So, it’s better to do without them.
Diuretics (furosemide, chlorthalidone) are another group of drugs that can interact with Advair. If you do need to use the medications in combination, ask you medical expert to evade heart problems and hypokalemia.
Also, Advair interacts with a range of antidepressants (phenelzine, desipramine, selegiline) and heart rate drugs (propranolol). In the first case, there is an increased risk for heart problems, whereas heart rate drugs can cause breathing problems.
The section gives you only a general idea. To know the full list of interactions, check the official instructions or consult your doctor.
